Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15), we celebrate the Blessed Mother's assumption into heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life.
It is not known on which day Mary's Assumption actually took place, but the solemnity is celebrated on August 15. It is a holy day of obligation, but in 2026, the feast is on Saturday so, in accord with the complementary norm to canon 1246 §2 confirmed for the dioceses of the United States of America, the obligation to attend Mass on this date is abrogated in 2026.
Although it is is not a holy day of obligation, several parishes are holding special Masses to commemorate the feast day.
